FORMER Status Quo virtuoso Jeff Rich taught hundreds of local youngsters everything they needed to know about the drum last week.
Rich attended Gateways School to host a drum and percussion masterclass for children from Years 4, 5 and 6 from Gateways, Harewood Primary, Brackenfield in Harrogate and Moorfield School in Ilkley.

The workshop was split into two sections and dealt with the history of the drum, how it developed from Africa, right through to the modern snare drum.

The children were then invited to play different drums throughout the session before Rich played a solo himself to show how versatile a drum kit could be.

Paul Dutton, Director of Music at Gateways said: “Educationally, the benefits of such a session are seen in having a world famous instrumentalist who inspires and enthuses pupils in their music making and encourages them to take up an instrument, whether it is the drums or something else.

“Jeff was able to pass on his vast knowledge of working alongside one of the most famous bands in the world and to tell of his experiences of both touring and performing in arenas across the world. “
