FORMER Killinghall player Steve Gilmour has become the latest Australian cricketer who played in the Harrogate area to be called into the Victorian State Squad.
He follows ex-Bilton batsman Lloyd Mash and former Follifoot allrounder Darren Pattinson who both made their mark in the Aire Wharfe league before making the step up.
Gilmour has come a long way after showcasing his rare talent for ‘Hall during th
eir 2006 season.
The then 19-year-old had a steady season with the ball taking 35 wickets at 17.00 apiece as his side finished the season third behind Pannal and Newby Hall in Nidderdale League Division One.
Gilmour has impressed the state selectors for his consistent displays for First Grade club Ringwood who scooped the Premier Cricket title in Melbourne last season and has been called up as a rookie.
"I had an absolute blast playing for Killinghall. By the end of it I didn't want to leave," said Gilmour
"My best memories were seeing the guys thinking I couldn't bat but then they watched me win the Evening League batting averages, and also winning the Atkinson/Swires Cup beating Pannal.
"The plans for the future now are to build on my rookie contract and turn that into a full time contract and to play cricket for my state at some stage. I'm really just trying to take my cricket to the next stage."
Killinghall captain Tony Whittaker was delighted with the news and predicts a bright future in the game for the youngster.
“When he was over here he showed great attitude and commitment,” said Whittaker.“
“We’re pleased for Steve, he was a good cricketer and I think he enjoyed his time while he was over here.
“I think it’s the first time an overseas has played for us and then gone onto the State Squad so we’re pleased with that.”
