AN arduous flag-carrying journey across Europe by members of the 21 Engineers has ensured their regiment's standard is flying proudly in Ripon.
The 21 Engineer Regiment has moved from its former base in Osnabruck, Germany, to its new home at Claro Barracks after 38 Engineer Regiment left Ripon last week.

Carrying the flag for 10 days, the soldiers have travelled from the German base by bicycle, ferry and on foot so that it could be raised at Claro Barracks, on Monday.

Their journey, which included cycling to Rotterdam to catch a ferry and a week-long foot-slog from Hull to Ripon taking in Leconfield, Driffield, Castle Howard, Helmsley and Topcliffe, raised money for Help for Heroes, a charity assisting soldiers wounded in Britain's current conflicts.

One of the walkers, Sgt Maj Mark Penna, said: "It has been a long 10 days. The cycling was not too bad but the last five days has been hard on the legs.

"We have plenty of blisters and sprains but it has been smooth running."

Pints were waiting on the bar for the soldiers who had marched with nothing more than field rations. They can now put their feet up and take a well-earned rest as they enjoy a few weeks' leave.
