THE end of an era was marked at Claro Barracks this week as the regimental flag of 38 Engineer Regiment was taken down for final time.
After almost 50 years based in Ripon, the regiment is moving to Northern Ireland and will be replaced at Claro Barracks by 21 Engineer Regiment, which is relocating from Germany.

Commanding Officer Lt Col Roger Lewis, who was one of the last members of 38 Engineer Regiment to leave the barracks on Wednesday, said: "As a regiment we have been very fortunate to be able to work closely with the town hall, the cathedral and many of the local businesses, but I am sure it will be the reciprocal affection of the city's population that will be missed the most as we say farewell.

"Nevertheless, 38 Engineer Regiment is looking forward to a bright future based in Northern Ireland and we will be extremely busy from the outset, preparing for another operational deployment, which this time will be to Afghanistan.

"It has been a real honour to be based in Ripon and on behalf of all ranks I would like to thank the city for all their support over the last 49 years and wish everyone well for the future."
