A SCENIC Scottish walking route will be tackled by a Ripon couple to raise money for a charity in the city.
Peter and Carolyn Holbrook will be walking the 95-mile West Highland Way from Milngavie, near Glasgow, to Fort William in eight days to raise money for Middle of the Road Trust Fund next month.
The couple, who live on Ash Grove, decided to raise m
oney for the charity because of the important work it does in providing a day care support facility for disabled people aged 18 to 65-years-old in the Ripon area.
Mrs Holbrook, 48, said: “I think people often raise funds for the big charities and it is nice to be able to do something for the smaller organisations.
“Middle of the Road is a self-funded local charity and I know of the good work they do and how important it is for the people they help.”
The couple were inspired to tackle the Scottish walk, which takes ramblers from the Lowlands, across the Highland boundary fault and into the Highlands, when they visited relatives in Scotland and went for coffee at Bridge of Orchy, a landmark stop on the route.
Mrs Holbrook said: “We saw all the ramblers coming past and we are quite keen walkers so we thought we would have a go.”
Much of the West Highland Way follows ancient and historic routes as it winds along drovers’ roads, former military roads and disused railway lines.
The Holbrooks are raising money on a joint-sponsor form and, to add an interesting twist, Mrs Holbrook will be wearing a pedometer on the walk and sponsors are invited to guess the total number of steps she will take on the 95-mile route.
The sponsor whose guess is closest to the actual total will receive a prize. As a hint, Mrs Holbrook said she walks on average 1,960 steps per mile.
