NIDDERDALE schoolchildren were the stars of the BBC's Countryfile on Sunday as they explored a hay meadow near Stean.
A group of youngsters from Fountains Earth C of E School in Lofthouse were on a school trip to the Nidderdale AONB to learn about hay meadows, and were filmed for the prime time TV show with ranger Colin Slator. They were filming some of the natural inhabitants of the hay fields, the common shrew, bank vole and wood mouse, and the children watched fascinated as they were released from the humane animal traps.

The captured small mammals are released unharmed back into their environment.

This summer, over 100 events celebrating hay meadows and haymaking are being held throughout the Yorkshire Dales area, which includes Nidderdale AONB.
