A TOP Indian chef took his culinary skills into a Nidderdale school to teach pupils all they need to know about curry.
Shaan Khan, 28, executive chef of the award-winning Raj Put Restaurant in Harrogate, cooked up a traditional Indian lunch for staff and students at Belmont Grosvenor School, where his younger brother Omar was a former pupil.

And after serving up dinner for 180 at the Birstwith prep school, he gave lessons in Indian cuisine to a class of pupils.

The children loved their taste of authentic Indian cuisine and Omar, who has just finished a law degree, enjoyed visiting his former school.

Shaan said: “A lot of schools have a curry dish on their menus, but it is nothing like traditional Indian curry.

“It was great cooking for Belmont Grosvenor School. I did a chicken dish, some dahl, vegetables, rice and naan bread.

“It’s a well-balanced diet – two servings of vegetables, some meat and rice and bread. They really enjoyed it.”

After lunch Shaan, with the help of Omar, gave some of the pupils a lesson in Indian cooking and explained all about spices.

Headteacher Jane Merriman was delighted Shaan had agreed to cook at Belmont Grosvenor and said everyone enjoyed their meal.

“It really was a wonderful occasion and one that the pupils, and staff, thoroughly enjoyed,” she said.

“The food was delicious and nutritious and as well as Shaan coming, we enjoyed welcoming Omar to his former school.

“Shaan’s visit complements work children in Year 4 have been doing as part of their geography lessons – carrying out a study of an Indian village and studying different cultures and lifestyles.

“We will be sending our daily lunch allowance to charity as a way of saying thank you.”
